//

István is fifteen and lives with his mother in a prefabricated housing estate on the outskirts of a Hungarian city. He is shy and finds it difficult to understand the social codes of his peers. When a reluctant acquaintance with a neighbor his mother’s age develops into a sexual relationship that István himself barely understands, his life spirals out of control. The years that follow take István from Hungary to London, where he shuffles from job to job and where every fork in the road he takes is determined by the good or selfish intentions of strangers. As he rises and eventually falls in unexpected ways, István himself remains almost uninvolved in the action, speechless – a silent observer of his own turbulent life.

Hypnotically, with shattering emphasis and great sensitivity, David Szalay tells of a life in its intimate moments – a life that is barely perceptibly marked by the shocks of the present and the precariousness of human existence in a cold Europe. David Szalay talks about this and his novel with presse editor Xenia Sircar. The German text will be read by Dominikus Weileder.

Rachel Cusk »Coventry«

The author in conversation with Marie Kaiser

Not only those who have read Rachel Cusk’s spectacular »Outline« trilogy will be curious about her essays: What happens to us and childhood memories when our own parents suddenly stop talking to us? What kind of person do you become when you have children of your own? How is it that even as a supposedly modern woman in the midst of divorce, one suddenly falls into archaic role clichés? (And last but not least: Why do we regress while driving?) As in her novels, Rachel Cusk asks smart and precise questions in her essays, without sparing herself, and thus once again hits as precisely as painfully (and hilariously) at the heart of what it means to be a woman, to have a family, to be an artist in our present day.

Joining the author on the panel is radio journalist Marie Kaiser, who will discuss these and other questions with Rachel Cusk.

//

(Und last but not least: Warum regredieren wir beim Autofahren?)

Tanti auguri, Beppe Fenoglio!

Samanta Schweblin »Hundert Augen« Suhrkamp Insel, 2020

//
