On December 1, 2021, Picador Guest Professor Don Mee Choi read from her books »Hardly War« and »DMZ Colony« and talked with Sung Un Gang at the event »War, Resistance, Poetry«.

Don Mee Choi was born in Seoul, South Korea, and is the author of »Hardly War« and »DMZ Colony«. The latter won the National Book Award in 2020. She has published three books, several pamphlets of poems and essays and translated volumes of poetry by Kim Hyesoon and Yi Sang, among others. Choi has received the 2021 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship for Poetry, 2019 International Griffin Poetry Prize for her translation of Kim Hyesoon’s Autobiography of Death (New Directions, 2018), 2019 DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Fellowship and many more.

As the current Picador Guest Professor she is teaching American Studies at the University Leipzig. The moderator and partner on stage for the event is Sung Un Gang, a research associate at the University of Bonn and a Ph. Prof. Dr. Maureen Maisha Auma ist Erziehungswissenschaftlerin und Geschlechterforscherin. Sie ist seit April 2008 Professorin für Kindheit und Differenz (Diversity Studies) an der Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal. Zwischen 2014 bis 2019 war sie Gastprofessorin an der Humboldt-Universität-Berlin, am Zentrum für transdisziplinäre Geschlechterstudien und am Institut für Erziehungswissenschaften. 2020 – 2021 war sie Gastprofessorin am Zentrum für Interdisziplinäre Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung der TU Berlin. Aktuell ist sie DiGENet Gastprofessorin, Audre Lorde Chair for Intersectional Diversity Studies, Diversity and Gender Equality Network der Berlin University Alliance (BUA), am Standort TU Berlin. Maureen Maisha Auma ist Mitherausgeberin von »Mythen, Masken und Subjekte«. Das Buch erschien zum ersten Mal 2005 beim Unrast Verlag. Die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der Kategorie Weißsein wird aus einer Schwarzen Perspektive als konzeptionellem Schwerpunkt vorgenommen und somit der enorme und durchaus nachhaltige Einfluss Schwarzer Menschen und People of Color in Wissenschaft und Kunst gewürdigt.

Daniel James ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Philosophie der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf und Geschäftsführer des Düsseldorf Institute for Philosophy of Public Affairs. Dort leitet er derzeit gemeinsam mit Leda Berio und Benedict Kenyah-Damptey ein partizipatives Forschungsvorhaben über »Rasse: Zur Aushandlung eines belasteten deutschen Ausdrucks«. In Zusammenarbeit mit Franz Knappik und der Unterstützung von Dina Emundts und Tobias Rosefeldt organisiert Daniel James die Workshop-Reihe »Hegel (anti)kolonial«. Das Ziel dieser Workshop-Reihe ist es, eine Plattform für fortlaufende Debatten über das ambivalente koloniale Erbe in Hegels Philosophie zu bieten.

Jeannine Kantara ist Journalistin, Redaktionsassistentin bei der ZEIT und Mitbegründerin der Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland (ISD). Ihr Text »Gestern, heute und darüber hinaus. Brief einer afrodeutschen Mutter an ihre afrodeutschen Kinder« erschien im Oktober 2021 in der Ausgabe »Farbe bekennen« der S. Fischer-Reihe „Neue Rundschau“. In „Black Berlin – Die deutsche Metropole und ihre afrikanische Diaspora in Geschichte und Gegenwart“ (Metropol, 2013) veröffentlichte Jeannine Kantara u.a. einen Text zur Geschichte der Zeitschrift afro look und die Anfänge der ISD. Zudem wirkte die Journalistin an dem Buch »May Ayim. Radikale Dichterin, sanfte Rebellin«, das im August 2021 beim Unrast Verlag veröffentlich wurde, mit. Eine Veranstaltung von Holtzbrinck Berlin in Kooperation mit der Humboldt Universität zu Berlin und dem Heimathafen Neukölln.

In »Wut und Böse« (hanserblau, 2021) beschreibt Ciani-Sophia Hoeder, Journalistin und Gründerin von »RosaMag«, wie wütende Frauen Geschichte und Popkultur geprägt haben. Die Autorin und politische Aktivistin Sharon Dodua Otoo blickt in »Adas Raum« (S. Fischer, 2021) aus weiblicher Perspektive auf traumatische Ereignisse und erzählt, wie diese weiterhin auf unsere Gegenwart fortwirken. Melanelle B. C. Hémêfa ist Mitwirkende vom Essayband »Schwarz wird groß geschrieben« (&Töchter, 2021). In ihrem Text erzählt sie von ihrer Lebensrealität und welche Ziele und Zukunftsvisionen sie sich erträumt.

Die Autorinnen lesen aus ihren Texten und sprechen mit Amna Franzke, Mitglied der Chefredaktion ZEIT Campus, und Sascha Chaimowicz, Chefredakteur ZEIT Magazin, über Feminismus und die Bedeutung von Wut als Antrieb für gesellschaftlichen Wandel.

Die Veranstaltungsreihe »Black Voices – in Literatur, Politik & Wissenschaft« wird präsentiert von Holtzbrinck Berlin, dem Heimathafen Neukölln & der Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. Netzwerkpartner für diese Veranstaltung ist RosaMag.

Samanta Schweblin was the Samuel Fischer Guest Professor at Freie Universität Berlin during winter semester 2020/21 . She is considered one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary Argentine literature. Her award-winning work has been translated into 25 languages and includes three volumes of short stories and three novels.

Moritz Lünenborg lives and works as a radio journalist in Magdeburg and Leipzig. Most recently, his short story »Magdeburg y nada« was published in the Mexican magazine Salvaje literatura y arte.

Picador Guest Professor Oksana Marafioti reads from »American Gypsy« and her essay »On Making Wishes« (The Rumpus) and spoke with Daniel Peña about how literary activism shapes cultural identity.

Born in South Korea, Don Mee Choi incorporates in her poetry photos by her father, a war photographer, and other visual and archival materials in order to explore the overlapping histories of Korea and the US. She is a renowned translator of Korean poetry and has taken over the Picador Guest Professorship for Literature at the University of Leipzig in the winter semester of 2021/22.

Don Mee Choi talks about being a Picador Guest Professor in Leipzig and the art of translating lyrics with poet and translator Uljana Wolf and host Sung Un Gang.

Uljana Wolf teaches seminars on poetry and translation at Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig, Institut für Sprachkunst, and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and is currently working on a translation of Choi’s poetry collection »DMZ Colony« (Wave Books, 2020). Most recently, Uljana Wolf published the essay collection »Etymologischer Gossip« (Kookbooks Verlag, 2020) on poetry, translation, and multilingualism.

The evening is moderated by Sung Un Gang, research associate in the Department of Korean Studies at the University of Bonn and host of the podcast »Bin ich süßsauer?« that features interviews with queer Asians in Germany. Simultaneously interpreted by Lilian-Astrid Geese.

Dr. phil. Marion Kraft ist Autorin von u. a. »Empowering Encounters with Audre Lorde« und »Kinder der Befreiung – Transatlantische Erfahrungen und Perspektiven Schwarzer Deutscher der Nachkriegsgeneration«. Katharina Oguntoye ist die Mitherausgeberin von »Farbe bekennen. Afro-deutsche Frauen auf den Spuren ihrer Geschichte« und Autorin von u. a. »Schwarze Wurzeln«.

Beide Frauen waren ausschlaggebend für die afro-deutsche Bewegung in den 1980ern, arbeiteten, schrieben, lernten und lehrten in Verbindung mit der afroamerikanischen Dichterin Audre Lorde und der afro-deutschen Schriftstellerin May Ayim. Dr. Johanna Lukate ist Research Fellow am Max-Planck-Institut zur Erforschung multireligiöser und multiethnischer Gesellschaften. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt ist die Bedeutung von Race, Körper, Gender, Migration und Diaspora für Identität. Als Kulturwissenschaftlerin, Psychologin und Soziologin, hat sie an weltweiten Einrichtungen wie der Yale University und University of Cambridge ihr Wissen erweitert und angewandt.

Sheila Heti is the current Picador Guest Professor for Literature at the University of Leipzig. Heti is the author of eight books of fiction and non-fiction, including the novels »Motherhood«, »How Should a Person Be?«, and the story collection, »The Middle Stories«. She was featured by the New York Times as one of »The New Vanguard«; a list of fifteen women writers from around the world who are »shaping the way we read and write fiction in the 21st century.« Her books have been translated into twenty-two languages.

Teresa Bücker works as a freelance journalist, moderator and consultant. Until June 2019, she worked as editor-in-chief of the online magazine EDITION F and was awarded »Journalist of the Year« in 2017 and again in the category »Culture« in 2019. At conferences, in magazines, on television and in workshops, she regularly discusses the changing world of work (new work, organizational culture, leadership, diversity & inclusion), justice, power, sexual empowerment and digital strategies for journalism.

On May 19, Sheila Heti read from her books »The Middle Stories« and »How Should a Person Be?«. Afterwards, the author spoke with Teresa Bücker about writing, her time as a Picador Guest Professor, online seminars, sex and feminism.
