The letters from the project are addressed to Europe, or, perhaps, to the whole world, and aim to bring the language of art, thought-out, precise and rigorous, back to public discourse. Each year a preeminent poet or thinker presents the problems they consider the most pressing.

Heiko, Thomas und Karsten wollen alles anders machen als ihre von den orientierungslosen 1990er Jahren verbitterten Eltern. Statt eines Aufstiegs in blühenden Landschaften erwarten die drei Freunde die Übernahme eines maroden Schlachtbetriebs, benebelte Montageeinsätze in dunklen Kabelschächten und Bewerbungstrainings im Jobcenter. Jahre später haben sich die Freunde aus dem Blick verloren.

Daniel Schmidt und Klaas Anders, Mitorganisatoren des Globale° Festivals, geben im Gespräch einen Einblick in ihre Arbeit.

Nach ihrem Debüt »Und es schmilzt« (2017), mit dem Lize Spit 2017 Gast bei der globale° war, ist die niederländisch-flämische Autorin nun zurück mit ihrem zweiten Roman. In diesem verhandelt sie die Geschichte des Paares Leo und Simon und die Frage, was mit der Beziehung passiert, wenn eine Hälfte aufgrund einer psychischen Krankheit sich immer mehr aus dem bisherigen Leben zurückzieht.

»Die Geschichte eines Buches« ist eine Theaterverarbeitung der wahren Vergangenheit der jüdischen Familie Strach aus Brünn. Die Theateraufführung ist zugleich ein Ergebnis des Projektes »Bibliothek der verlorenen Hoffnungen« der Jüdischen Gemeinde Brünn. Dabei werden Nachkommen gesucht von ermordeten Besitzern von mehr als 12.000 liturgischen Büchern, die den jüdischen Familien beim Transport in den Tod abgenommen worden sind.

Schlesenburg. So heißt die Siedlung am Stadtrand, in der fast mehrheitlich Familien aus Polen wohnen. Sie alle tragen Hoffnungen und Träume in sich, sie alle teilen den Schmerz über eine verlassene Heimat und die Suche nach einer Neuen. Es ist Sommer ’89, und eine Wohnung in der Burg geht in Flammen auf.

Mohamed Mbougar Sarr’s Prix Goncourt-winning novel constitutes a kind of a test. The Senegalese writer poses questions about the meaning of writing literature; however, for him this is not a general question, but rather the dilemma of someone who is aware of the injustices that have befallen people living in African countries.
