Freedom of Expression for Belarus!

Freedom of Expression for Belarus!

The situation in Belarus has not improved, since the last presidential election: People continue to be locked up and tortured simply because they demand a different policy in their country. Especially the literary scene is under strong pressure, authors are persecuted, publishing houses are not allowed to publish and important associations like PEN and the Union of Belarusian Writers (UBW) are closed. We need to clearly address these unbearable conditions and signalize the democratic movement in Belarus that we will not forget them. That has been the aim of our rally during the Frankfurt Book Fair 2021.

Participants were: Sasha Filipenko (author), Alexandra Logovina (Head of Public Outreach in the office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya), Nina George (author and President of the European Writers Council), Alexander Skipis (Chief Executive of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association), Regula Venske (President of the PEN Center Germany), Michael Rubin (Coordinator Embassy of the People of Belarus in Germany), Hilime Arslaner-Gölbașı (Head of the City Council of Frankfurt).
