Literature can help educate about historical conflicts and make social, economic and psychological consequences tangible through the detailed portrayal of the characters‘ souls. But how do women authors write about wars that have been largely ignored by patriarchal historiography? What is the process of research, how is the fictionalisation of the protagonists, about whom often only a few documents exist?
Lauri Kubuitsile’s historical novel »Dispersion« tells the story of two women united by the struggle for survival. The book sensitively tells of inconceivable suffering, including in the Lüderitz concentration camp, but also of the indomitability of the human spirit and the power of love.
In her highly acclaimed debut novel »House of Stone«, Novuyo Rosa Tshuma interweaves the personal story of the narrator and his family with the history of Zimbabwe. The book begins before Zimbabwe’s independence and ends with the period after land reform, but it is far more than a historical or suspense novel; it is a profound psychological portrait of deeply traumatised characters who exemplify a traumatised society.

Literatur kann dazu beitragen, über historische Konflikte aufzuklären und durch die detaillierte Darlegung des Seelenlebens der Figuren gesellschaftliche, ökonomische und psychologische Folgen erfahrbar machen. Wie aber schreiben Autorinnen über Kriege, die von der patriarchalen Geschichtsschreibung weitgehend ignoriert wurden? Wie verläuft der Prozess der Recherche, wie die Fiktionalisierung der Protagonist:innen, über die oft nur wenige Dokumente existieren?
Lauri Kubuitsiles historischer Roman »Zerstreuung« erzählt die Geschichte zweier Frauen, die der Kampf um das Überleben verbindet. Einfühlsam erzählt das Buch von unfassbarem Leid, u.a. im Konzentrationslager Lüderitz, aber auch von der Unbeugsamkeit des menschlichen Geistes und der Kraft der Liebe.
Novuyo Rosa Tshuma verknüpft in ihrem hochgelobten Debütroman »Haus aus Stein« die persönliche Geschichte des Erzählers und dessen Familie mit der Geschichte Simbabwes. Das Buch beginnt vor der Unabhängigkeit Simbabwes und endet mit der Zeit nach der Landreform, ist aber weit mehr als ein historischer oder Spannungsroman, sondern ein tiefschürfendes psychologisches Porträt zutiefst traumatisierter Figuren, die exemplarisch für eine traumatisierte Gesellschaft stehen.
